With NZ Fairtrade Fortnight starting from tomorrow (4th – 17th August) I thought it was a timely moment a post about where you can buy organic fair-trade and sustainable produce in Wellington.
I have to admit, although this is an issue I think about and care about it is hard to stick to buying fair trade and organic all the time. But the great thing about fair trade fortnight is that it helps to remind you of the things you can do to support and assist with this important cause.
I had a request for this info from a blog reader, and I agree with her, it is hard to find good information about where to buy organic in Wellington. If anyone knows of any other places that I have missed, do comment below and I will add them to the list. Hope this helps!
Where to buy Organic + Fair Trade in Wellington
Commonsense Organics
With locations in Wellington City, Kilbirnie, Lower Hutt, Kapiti and Johnsonville this is your best local spot for organic and fair trade food, health and wellness products and home essentials. They are really lovely in store and have a massive range of stuff so you can do your whole shop. I have mentioned it before and I’ll mention it again because it is amazing, but they also do a fruit and veg box delivery which we LOVE in my house because it makes life so easy and its such great produce and means far less plastic. Definitaly a big one for where to buy organic in Wellington.

Farmers Market at Hill Street
There are several farmers weekend markets in Wellington and they are all worth visiting but this one at Hill Street is particularly lovely because it is all local and artisan and organic. It is a little bit on the expensive side but there are some really lovely things sold. It is every saturday between 8:30 and 12 in Hill Street car park of cathedral of st paul.

Moore Wilson
Moore Wilson is a local institution. It is a beautiful local ‘super-market’ selling everything you need in really good quality. They have a deli counter, bakery, freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh coffee in store. As well as this they sell bulk items and home items. Even if you don’t go (lets admit it, cant afford to go) there for your weekly shop it is well worth popping in and checking out. I bought tonnes of local NZ produce and preserves here to take home for my family at Christmas.
Address: Corner of Tory Street and College Street, Te Aro
Bin Inn Petone
I actually just strolled past this place the other week and discovered it. It is a limited waste whole food store. Everything is sold out of large bins so you can either get packaging there or, to give a little back to the environment, you can bring your own jars and bags. They have everything here, even freshly made peanut butter you can bring a jar for. Its well worth checking out if this is your local area. There are 36 of these around the country too.
Address: 211 Jackson Street, Petone
Sustainability Trust Eco Shop
This pro-active organisation help you reduce your energy and water consumption with a range of resource-efficient appliances, insulation options and clever tools. They sell solutions for reducing waste, getting the best out of your garden and buying ethically. Its a great place to go for ideas about how to reduce your impact. It is also worth checking out the website for ideas and events related to sustainable living.
Address: 2 Forresters Lane, Te Aro
Moshim’s Newtown Food Mart
Moshims has been a food destination in Wellington for the past 15 years. They sell fresh produce, bulk spices and international grocery items. They sell to the public but also to restaurants in the region.
Address: 2-6 Wilson Street, Newtown
Local Butchers and Bakeries
It is always better to support local and small businesses where you can. There are bakeries and butchers in various different parts of Wellington that you can pop into. Even on Lampton Quay, right in the middle of town there is a fish monger. Hunt out your local baker and butcher and try to go there often.
The Many Fruit and Veg Weekend Markets
There are lots of great fruit and veg markets in Wellington at the weekends. On Saturday there is the brilliant one at Newtown School. And on Sunday you have the harbour front market as well as the Victoria Street market. Here you can find masses of fruit and veg for good prices. Shop around the different stalls to find the best price on the day because they vary a lot.
Newtown Fruit and Veg Market, Mein St, Newtown, Saturdays 8am – 1pm
Harborside Market – Next to Te Papa, Sundays 7:30am-1pm
Victoria Farmers Market: Corner Willis, Victoria and Vivian Streets, Sundays 6 am – 2.30 pm.
Leeds Street Bakery
This wont get you your weekly shop but Leeds Street is a foodies’ destination. Leeds Street Bakery in particular sells amazing artisan bread. Arguably the best bread you can get in Wellington. You can also pick up some Fix & Fogg peanut butter to go with this and some chocolate from the Wellington Chocolate Factory.
Address: 6G/14 Hannah Factory Laneway, Te Aro,
Local Cafes
I often pick up great local produce from cafes in Wellington. They all seem to be selling bread and other bit of great local produce. I am particularly pleased with the selection at Hillside Kitchen and Cellar in Thorndon. They sell bacon, butter, chorizo, bread and loads of other preserves for pretty good prices. You can also pick up lovely bread at Loretta on Cuba and others around town.
Havana Coffee
Havana is a local Wellington Roastary. Located on Tory Street, they were one of the first and pioneering companies to follow a Fair Trade model. It is made in Wellington and sold all over, so worth picking some up if you see it.
Address: 163 Tory St, Te Aro, Wellington 6011
Trade Aid
This store sells beautiful home wares and some food supplies all guaranteed fair trade. There are particularly beautiful bedding sets and kitchen ware. They also sell whole sale for those wanting to stock some fair trade products. They sell food produce from overseas and ensure that right down to the farmer the price has been fair. There are many of these stores all over NZ.
