Back at it again with my Wellington Top 5 Series! I have already written about my Top 5 Wellington coffee spots and my Top 5 Wellington Restaurants, but this time I am talking about the best Wellington cheap eats. YES, the only thing better than good food is good food that is cheap. There are loads of places in the city that you can grab a cheap bite to eat and I thought I would narrow it down to my tried and tested Top 5. All local and independent of course and a mixture of cuisines and flavours to suit your mood.
Here you go, my contenders for the best Wellington cheap eats:
(What have I missed? Let me know in the comments below)
My Top 5 Wellington Cheap Eats
This little Mexican joint is so yum. You might not have heard about it unless you go past it on your way in and out of town, but it’s on Cambridge Terrace next to the Embassy Theatre and it’s a gem of a place serving amazing vegetarian tacos. I highly recommend trying the spiced tofu, the rosti tacos and the mushroom ceviche. This place is DELISH. Not to be missed if you like authentic Mexican and/or great vegetarian food.
Where: 23 Kent Terrace
The Ramen Shop in Newtown and now also in the CBD on Victoria Street is owned by the same guys that bring us Hillside Kitchen and Tinakori Bistro. The Ramen Shop is their more low key fare. The noodles are handmade and the ramen is really the most special in Wellington. My favourite is the Shoyu Shiitake Ramen, with pickled shiitake, but they also serve some great meaty options like Spicy Chicken and Tonkotsu. They are also hitting a lot of spots with their Bao Buns and in-house Kombucha.
Where: 99 Victoria Street or 191 Riddleford Street
There are quite a few decent burgers in Wellington, but for a totally reasonable price with lots of options, Ekim is your spot. They have such a huge selection of different kinds of burgers and the chips are amazing. The only downside, or upside depending on the weather is that Ekim is basically an outdoor burger van so you will be sitting outside. But Ekim is a must for a visit to Wellington
Where: 257 Cuba Street
Its really hard to choose between the many amazing and cheap Asian food joints in Wellington and I could fill this post with them. But this particular Malaysian restaurant is my favourite because it is no-frills, simple and the food is really consistently good. Don’t expect anything over the top but this place feels like it could actually be in Malaysia which is always a good sign for a food place from another country.
My favourite dish is the Curry Laksa and they do great roti too.
Where: 54 Ghuznee Street
You will likely know Fix and Fogg as your favourite Peanut Buttery in Eva Street. But did you know they also serve peanut butter on toast directly from their wee shop door? PB topped toast with all your favourite toppings! You will often find pop-ups and collabs with other Wellington and New Zealand food companies. This is a culinary delight that is SO Wellington. Definitely hit this up for breakie if you are in town at the right time 🙂
They are open from 9 to 3 Tuesday – Saturday.
Where: 5 Eva Street
Honorary Mentions:
Tommy Millions:
This might not necessarily be a cheap eat if you are after a whole pizza but you can grab a HUGE slice for $5. Perfect for a pre or post cinema. Or at the end of a night of beers. Or if you are sharing between 2 or 3 people, a whole pizza is between $26 and $30. I really wanted to include Tommy – so if you’re into pizza, I recommend you try them – it’s yum! Top 5 Pizzas coming soon!
Where: 101 Courtenay Place + 142 Featherston Street
Yoshi Sushi and Midland Sushi
Sushi is a fine cheap eat option and there are so many places you can a sushi snack in Wellington. If you are in the CBD, I consider the best to be Yoshi (one on Lambton Quay and one on Featherstone Street) and Midland Sushi in Lambton Square. But again, sushi could have its own post!
Where: Yoshi: 110 Lambton Quay + 126 Featherstone Street / Midland: 5 Chews Lane + Midland Square
