On winter days and nights it is far too tempting to just spend them cuddles up on the couch watching hours of Netflix but let’s face it sometimes we just need to get out. Here are 10 ideas for things to do in Wellington during the winter.
-
Visit an exhibition
Winter is a great time to see art. The galleries are open and warm and it’s a good way to hide away from the cold and stimulate the mind. Check City Gallery, The Dowse, The Cuba Street Trail and all the rest and there will be multiple ways to spend winter days looking at art.
-
Take a short walk on the beach
The beach is great is summer but it is also so beautiful in winter. As we live in a city surrounded by beautiful bays, a short winter walk on the beach will always be lovely. Follow up with a windswept hot chocolate or red wine.
-
Go to the movies
Going to the cinema is the ultimate winter activity. Wellington is a film lover’s city and we have lots of amazing independent cinemas to while away some time. My personal favourite is Lighthouse Cuba Street where you can catch all the latest arthouse and more mainstream films.
Check out this article I wrote for Word on the Street Wellington about the best boutique cinemas in Welly HERE.

Take a course
Are Winter nights becoming dark and gloomy? What about taking on a new hobby? There are loads of evening courses to be tried in Welly. Check out Wellington High School’s huge list of courses or what about a Jewellery Making Course at Workspace Studios or a short course with YooBee Design School? The list is endless.

Go to the sauna
Feeling chilly? – hit the sauna! I love the Tory Urban Retreat Sauna on Tory Street and have mentioned it in my other blog posts: How to warm up in Wellington and Tory Urban Retreat.
-
Have a massage
Having a massage might seem indulgent but in winter it is essential! My recommendations would be to see Grace at Wellington Apothecary or hit up Elderberry and Kate for their hot stone massage – divine!
-
Do some hot yoga
Hot Yoga is my favourite winter exercise. Warm yourself up to the core with some hot flow. I love Hot Yoga Featherstone Street and my new treat is Space Yoga up at Mount Vic lookout. It is incredible. For all the best yoga studios in Wellington, check out my post: The best yoga studios in Wellington.
-
See some comedy
Everyone needs cheering up on a chilly day so I highly recommend some winter comedy. The Fringe bar has lots to see but also check out Meow, San Fran and BATS.
-
Shop!
Shopping is a great all year round activity and there are so many great boutiques to check out during the winter months – want to know what my faves are, see my post: My Favourite Wellington Boutiques.
-
Eat
When in doubt eat! Easy and great to do in Wellington and nothing more warming than a big plate of food! Check out my posts: Top 5 Wellington Cheap Eats, Top 5 Restaurants, Top 5 Pizzas, and Top 5 Brunch Spots for some ideas if needed!
