I have been on a quest. A quest to find the best natural deodorant! With all the recent research about products that we use and advice around using natural products that don’t contain carcinogens, I have really wanted to find a natural deodorant to replace the Dove Original cream stick. I gave the no-deodorant lifestyle a go, but by the time I have walked to work in my coat and landed in the hot office I find I definitely need something so I have tried and tested a lot in order to find my perfect one.

Everyone is different, so what works for me might be entirely different for you but I thought I would give a quick review of the ones I have tried as I know I would have liked this advice before I began my quest.

best natural deodorant NZ

Weleda – Citrus Deodorant

This one came highly recommended by other blogs I had read online so I thought I would give it a try. It contains biodynamic lemon peel oil, and no aluminium to support the bodies natural detoxification process. It is from a lovely glass bottle and has a water-like consistency. With spray deodorants, I often feel like it doesn’t clean up the sweat and just adds to it, but this one was not too bad. The citrus smell is really nice and I find that this deodorant does a great job of freshening up and lasts a good few hours. The downside is that it not an all-dayer, I would definitely need to have it in my bag and keep reusing it. But overall, I liked this one.

Aotearoad

I noticed this deodorant in New World a few weeks back and thought I would give it a try. The coolest thing about it is the packaging as it is made from cardboard so is completely biodegradable and recyclable. This is the first cosmetics packaging I have seen like this – it’s like a Calippo ice cream! Apart from the packaging though, I have really enjoyed using it. I love the creamy texture and moisturising effect that it has and I feel like it actually works. Its is made from all-natural ingredients that they say won’t clog pores. It did the job for me and for the price – it’s really good. I would definitely recommend this one.

Aesop – Déodorant

The Melbourne brand Aesop is known for its beautiful design and delicious smelling artisan-style skincare and scents so when I saw they did a deodorant I thought I would give it a try. I went for the spray rather than the wet roll on because I really dislike roll-on deodorant in general. I was happy with this spray and although it is quite expensive, it’s nice to have a little spritz of luxury sometimes!  The downside for me was that I felt it was more like a perfume body spray than a deodorant. I would definitely use it again for this purpose because it smells BEAUTIFUL.

A’kin – Natural Deodorant

I got this deodorant in a gift pack from a friend who lives in Australia and I loved it. It has the expensive Aesop oud smell that I love so I bought myself the larger size too. I love the smell of this and it is nice to have a spritz in the morning or after the gym. I definitely wouldn’t advise it for a strong deodorant though as it is more of a nice smelling body spray, much like the Aesop one but at a cheaper price point and a larger size.

Plant and Share – Natural Deodorant

I LOVE the deodorant from Plant and Share. It has the creamy moisturising consistency a Dove stick but is handmade and completely natural. I discovered this in a tiny gift store in Nelson and am completely won over by it. It actually works all day and it moisturising for your armpits too. They do two scents – lavender and tangerine. I have been using lavender and I can well and truly vouch for it. It comes in a little glass pot, you just rub it on with your finger and they also do refills so when you need to top up its a little bit cheaper. It’s AMAZING.

Sukin – Deodorant Spray

Australian brand Sukin is one that I use a lot. Their products are reasonably priced with good ethics and ingredients so I thought I would give the natural deodorant a go. This one is also similar to the Aesop and A’kin ones. Smells nice, feels nice and is refreshing but it doesn’t work as well for reducing scent as I would like. Its a good price though and can be found everywhere so not a bad option for a refreshing natural spray.

Conclusion:

The creamy style deodorants are my favourites without a doubt. Aotearoad and Plant and Share just seem to mop up the scent and sweat in an effective way than liquid spray ones and they last a lot longer. In terms of the liquid ones, I would say the Welda one is the best and the Aesop one is the most beautiful.

Overall –  the Plant and Share Natural Deodorant is my absolute favourite – it works, it’s natural and made in New Zealand and it feels good to support a small business like this.
